KEYNOTE: The “Wicked Challenge” of Data Governance
Michael Atkin, Managing Director, EDM Council

The practice of data management is complex but fairly straightforward.  It’s about capturing requirements, understanding dependencies, implementing standards, assuring data quality, aligning repositories, reconciling legacy environments and integrating data into business applications.  Organizational management is the challenge to overcome and the key to taming the ‘four horsemen of the EDM apocalypse’ (aka ignorance, arrogance, obsolescence and power).  And successful organizational management is all about effective governance.  In this session, we will …
  • Put data management into context as one of the essential pillars of effective operations
  • Explore the components of data governance and how they relate to one another
  • Look at the reality of what has and hasn’t worked within the financial industry
  • Understand the keys to governing an activity that is hard to articulate, difficult to measure and challenging to control
  • Explore the components of data governance and how they relate to one another in context of the new Data Management Maturity Assessment Methodology

KEYNOTE: Starting the Governance Journey: Driving Governance Through Solving Real Business Problems
Patrick Keaton, IBM’s North American Information Governance Practice Leader, IBM

Many organizations start governance programs with high goals and lofty objectives only to find them go the route of a governance project… they start and end and never reach what they set out to do.

In this session, Patrick Keaton will show how many companies with successful governance programs have started by focusing on solving a specific business problem rather than approaching governance for governance sake.  He will walk you through a tested Unified Governance Process that has delivering value to the business as its backbone rather than focusing on implementing a specific technology solution.

Bridging the Gap:  Building a Federated Data Governance Team
Natalie Sendele, Manager Data Governance, Artisan Partners

Data is an asset, but determining who is best suited to own the data can be difficult. While some companies may centralize their operations to one core team, a federated approach can facilitate a cross-functional team and overall broader data knowledge. The application of utilizing knowledgeable data owners within their respective business units enables a stronger connection to business workflows in addition to embedding governance principles across a greater number of departments. In practice this federated approach to data governance can result in reduced boundaries between the business and IT, deeper collaboration, and overall successful data quality related projects.

Topics include:

  • Recognition of data as an asset
  • Federated team framework
  • Differentiating between Data Owners and Data Stewards
  • Integrating data governance into enterprise data initiatives
  • Focused approach to trusted data

The Data Governance Center: a Platform to Increase your Data Maturity
Stijn Christiaens, Co-founder and Operational Director, Collibra

Most organizations consider themselves at the lower levels of maturity when it comes to Data Governance. Comments like "We are very immature.", "We just started socializing the idea of Data Governance.", "We have just had our first council meeting.", "We have pockets of business adoption." ... are all too familiar. Whether you are very mature or immature, the end goal of a Data Governance initiative is improving the way people treat data within your organization. In the end its about enabling and improving the process of data management.

Collibra's Data Governance Center is a platform which enables your Data Governance program, no matter whether the program is mature or immature. Collibra's supports the management of essential data assets (e.g., data definitions, business glossary, reference data, data domains, ...) which are critical instruments in any stage of maturity. More advanced data assets (e.g., business rules, policies, metrics & measures, …) can be governed as well. The Data Governance Center empowers your data stewards: it supports different organizational setups or operating models (e.g., functional, centralized, federated, ...), out of the box and configurable roles, responsibilities and workflows (e.g., approval, notification, issue management, ...).

Because both Business and IT adoption is critical, this content is easily accessible: using the Search Everywhere application, your data producers and consumers can pull up search results in the context of their work. The Business User Portal can be used to further browse, navigate, search and filter out what they need before engaging with the relevant data stakeholders (e.g., by raising an issue).

The Collibra Data Governance Center has been designed and developed as a configurable out of the box solution. The out of the box capabilities  (e.g., Steward and Stakeholder roles around Data Domains, Pre configured Data Governance workflows,...) as well as  the framework that the platform offers, will accelerate your Data Governance program. It also means that in later stages of maturity, you can configure it to match your organization's cultural and / or maturity needs, i.e.: set up your own roles and detailed, comprehensive workflows, tweak the measures and metrics, ...

In this session, we will introduce Collibra's Data Governance Center and show how it has been applied in various use cases, including best practices and lessons learnt.

The Governance of Data Quality: How to Avoid the “Whack a Mole” Paradigm
Matt Crittenden, Governance Specialist, IBM's North America Information Governance Organization, IBM

For many organizations, Data Quality equates to playing the carnival game “Whack a Mole”; as a data problem arises, resources are engaged and focused on dealing with the issue leaving them in a constant state of reacting to the next problem.

This technology agnostic session will focus on changing the paradigm, moving from Opportunistic based data quality to deploying an Enterprise Data Quality program.  Through a discussion of methodology and real life examples we will see how companies are successfully changing how Data Quality is being addressed.

Data Governance and Data Quality at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
Randy Hedegaard, Data Services Manager, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has learned many lessons in their implementation of a data governance program at the state level. In 2007, the agency made a realization about ensuring appropriate data quality to meet its obligations to protect our environment. Since that time, the agency has been committed to improving the usability and accessibility of their data. A large part of this investment has focused on building a data services organization and data governance strategy/processes.

In this session we will discuss:

  • How strong data governance and data services have helped us meet our client's ever-increasing demand for high quality data
  • • How these data improvement efforts have worked hand-in-hand with agency continuous improvement efforts as well as our IT project portfolio management
  • • How we have met the many challenges in our journey to make data quality a central part of everyone's work

Linking Business Strategy to IT Improvements Through Applied Data Governance
Michael Makatura, CIO, Risk Transfer and Holdings
Peter Aiken, Founding Director, VCU/Data Blueprint

Linking business goals to IT projects has long been considered to be a primary function of organizational CIOs.  This talk will explain how a specific organizational CIO attempted to accomplish this using traditional methods and how his frustration lead him to embrace a data centric governance process in order to 1) sell the solutions to upper management and 2) keep the organization focused on the analysis required to produce the correct results instead of on the "shiny objects" that become the focus of most IT development projects.  While immature but strong, Risk Transfers data governance has lead to immediate tangible results that demonstrate the value of this approach.

Driving Governance Initiatives with Metadata Management
Ravi Chivukula, Director of Business Solutions, ASG

This session presents the various levers that metadata management provides to accelerate and drive governance initiatives through your enterprise. True data governance is a lofty goal and one that isn't always easy to attain. But there are some best practices, leveraging enabling tools, that can help drive Governance initiatives in your enterprise. Business glossaries, for example, provide a solid foundation to drive business and IT collaboration when implementing your data governance strategies.  Reference data management accelerates Governance by drawing out business stakeholders and by creating a foundation for approval workflow. Ubiquitous availability of governed and context-classified metadata like business term definitions and reference data is a significant step towards organization-wide alignment. Robust and mature metadata capabilities like end-to-end lineage and impact analysis also set the stage for accelerating Governance.

Moving from Reactive to Proactive Information Governance
Dan Everett, Senior Director of Marketing, SAP

Many organizations take an ad hoc approach to information governance as a default, simply reacting when poor data shows up as business problems. With the growing awareness of the business impact of poor data, there is the realization that a proactive approach is needed that provides clear policies and rules, consistent processes, and an ability to monitor progress across the organization. This session will discuss recent innovations that help businesses move from reactive to proactive information governance and improve collaboration between IT and business people.

Topics include:

  • Integrated technologies that enable measurement, monitoring, and enforcement of information policies and standards across heterogeneous systems
  • User friendly interfaces that let lines of business owners take control of and responsibility for their own information
  • Process integration that enables structured and unstructured content to be governed in the context of specific business processes.

KEYNOTE PANEL: If You’re Not Doing Big Data Governance Now, You Soon Will Be
Moderator: Tony Shaw, Founder and CEO, DATAVERSITY
Panelists:
Sunil Soares, Founder and Managing Partner, Information Assets LLC
Eric Chacon, Global Head of Data Standards, Chief Data Office, Citi
Maria C. Villar, Global Vice President, Data Governance and Management, SAP

The relationship between Big Data and Data Governance was not obvious at first – after all, Big Data has mostly been about sandbox projects that don’t care so much about accuracy or accountability.  But as these efforts move into production, and Big Data becomes more mainstream, this perspective quickly starts to look naïve and we start to see that Big Data actually exposes numerous information and data governance risks.  A recent Gartner blog highlighted these concerns under the heading of “Data Governance is the New Black.”  So even if your data governance perspective doesn’t yet include Big Data, you need to know what’s coming in your very near future.  Our panel will therefore identify, define and advise you on these emerging issues.
    • There’s still much confusion about what Big Data means, so let’s deal with that
    • How is Big Data governance different from “regular” data governance?
    • Regulatory pressures and escalating governance requirements
    • Will your Data Governance program “scale” to Big Data requirements?
      • Volume
      • Velocity
      • Variation and Complexity
    • Emerging governance issues with Big Data
      • Privacy
      • Policy and access management
      • Transparency – Open data
      • External, third-party and crowdsourced data
      • Retention and archiving
